Have you ever thought about fasting before but you really didn't know how? A lot of us have. When we talk about fasting, we usually think about going on some long diet without eating but really fasting is not about that at all. The purpose of fasting is that we deny something of the flesh, whether it's food, drink, sleep or something that we really rely on in our daily lives and spend more time in our relationship with God. Matthew 6:16-18 tells us "Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly." Notice how the scripture says (when you fast), it doesn't say if you fast but when you fast. We shouldn't fast to lose weight but instead fast to develop a closer walk with God. Now some people may not be able to fast from food such as a diabetic for example but everyone can still fast from something in order to spend more time with God. Even if it means staying away from the T.V. or putting away your smart phone for example. In Isaiah chapter 58, we learn what true fasting is all about. It's not just a one time event in our life, but instead a lifestyle. Isaiah 58:8-9 says "Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy reward. Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am..."
How to Fast?
A great way for any believer to learn how to fast is by limiting how much you eat per day. If this is your first time fasting, we recommend that you do not go an entire day without eating to start off but instead maybe miss a meal a day for one week just to prepare yourself for longer fasting and eventually increase your goal to where you can go a full day without eating and so on. Fasting is not something that you have to do everyday but do what you feel is right and ask God for assistance. Again, we don't recommend fasting from food if you are a diabetic or have a health condition that requires you to have food but you can still fast from other things that take away your time with God. Fasting is the most powerful spiritual discipline and by fasting and prayer, the Holy Spirit is able to transform your life.
