Genesis 14
1 And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel (= keeper of the gods) king of Shinar (= country of two rivers, a plain in Babylon), Arioch (= venerable) king of Ellasar (= oak), Chedorlaomer (= servant) king of Elam (= eternity), and Tidal (= great son) king of nations;
Compare to Ruth 1:1, Isaiah 7:1, Jeremiah 1:3, Esther 1:1, 2 Samuel 21:1 (compare v. 14). The Assyrian Tablets show that Elam had conquered and overran Babylonia. According to the Assyrian tablets, Amraphel is identified as "Khammurabi", he reigned in the North (Shinar). Arioch (Eri-aku), an Elamite prince, reigned in the South at Larsa (Ellasar). Chedorlaomer is identified as "Kudur-Lahgumal". Tidal is identified as "Tudghula"; the tablet says he assembled the "Umman-manda", or the barbarian tribes of the Kurdish mountains, and that he "did evil" to the land of Bel. The Assyrian Tablets are shown to be correct by their agreement with Genesis. All of the names here are found on one tablet.
2 That these made war with Bera (= son of evil) king of Sodom (= burning), and with Birsha (= son of godlessness) king of Gomorrah (= submersion), Shinab (= splendor of the father) king of Admah (= earthly, fortress), and Shemeber (= lofty flight) king of Zeboiim (= gazelles), and the king of Bela (= destruction), which is Zoar (= smallness).
Compare to Genesis 14:8, Genesis 19:22.
3 All these were joined together in the vale of Siddim (a valley in Palestine, = field, plain), which is the salt sea (i.e. the Dead Sea).
4 Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
Twelve = the number of Government in Biblical numerics. Here we see the first occurrence of Thirteen: = the number of rebellion.
5 And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim (= of the two horns or peaks), and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emins in Shaveh Kiriathaim,
Something to note is that the Rephaims are a branch from the second influx of the nephilim (fallen angels).
6 And the Horites (= cave dwellers) in their mount Seir, unto Elparan, which is by the wilderness (i.e. by the desert).
7 And they returned, and came to Enmishpat (= the spring of judgment. At the time, not yet Kadesh), which is Kadesh (= holy, sanctuary, a place in the desert), and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezontamar (= pruning of palm trees).
8 And there went out the king of Sodom (i.e. Bera [son of evil]), and the king of Gomorrah (i.e. Birsha [son of godlessness]), and the king of Admah (i.e. Shinab [splendor of the father]), and the king of Zeboiim (i.e. Shemeber [lofty flight]), and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim (i.e. by the Dead Sea);
9 With Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five (combined = 9).
9 represents the number of judgment.
10 And the vale of Siddim was full of slimepits (= bitumen); and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountain.
Bitumen is still a feature of the Dead Sea today.
11 And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way.
12 And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son (his nephew), who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.
Here we see the emphasis pertaining to Genesis 13:12.
13 And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he (in contrast to Lot) dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram.
Here we see that Abram has now gotten the news that his nephew (Lot) has been taken captive. Remember from the end of the last chapter, Abram made friends with those who dwelt in the plain of Mamre. Below we'll see how he and his friends respond. Hebrew = the one who crossed over the river (Euphrates).
14 And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained (= initiated) servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen (i.e. 318 troops), and pursued them unto Dan.
As we can see, Abram has armed his initiated servants; most likely in the worship of YHVH (GOD). Notice there were 318: 3 symbolizes resurrection; 100 symbolizes GOD's election (the children of promise); 18 symbolizes bondage. Keep in mind Lot is in bondage at this time. Note that this is not the same Dan of Judges 18:29, but instead a city in Northern Palestine, long before the Danites even changed the name of Laish.
15 And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah (= hiding place), which is on the left hand of Damascus (Syria).
16 And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot (i.e. his brother's son [Lot]), and his goods, and the women also, and the people.
Notice Abram brought back all the goods, as well as Lot and his goods, and the rest of the people. That was because GOD was with them. Here we see more blessings poured out among Abram for standing up for what is right. Just as Abram stood up for what was right, and taught his army to stand up for what is right, and remained close to GOD, so should we too as CHRISTians remain close to GOD and stand up for what is right today; remember, CHRISTians are never second-class citizens.
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's (= the KING of Salem) dale.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem (= peace) brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
Notice Melchizedek brought forth the same things used in our Holy Communion today, which is bread and wine; bread symbolizing CHRIST's body and wine symbolizing CHRIST's blood. In the Hebrew, Melchizedek means King of Righteousness and Peace. As we know, there is only One TRUE King of Righteousness and Peace, and that is JESUS CHRIST HIMself. So as we can see, this King of Righteousness and Peace (Melchizedek) is CHRIST, before HE entered this flesh life as the SON. To further document this, you can study Psalm 110, as well as Hebrews 6-7. See also John 8:56-58, where JESUS addressed HIS relationship with Abraham (Abram).
19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he (Abram) gave him (Melchizedek) tithes of all.
Notice Abram tithed to HIM, that is because he knew HE represented the MOST HIGH (YHVH).
21 And the king (Bera = son of evil) of Sodom (= burning) said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.
Here we see Bera trying to convince Abram to hand over the people that were just freed, as if he (Bera) deserved them or had any part in Abram's victory.
22 And Abram said to the king (Bera) of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand (i.e. swear an oath) unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
Abram new exactly who the credit belonged to (GOD), because he knew that it was GOD who delivered the enemy into his hand, and who allowed him and his very small army of 318 to defeat them. Just as Abram and his very small army of 318 troops received the victory at this time, so will we as GOD's elect (those who have the SEAL of GOD in their foreheads [which is very few]) receive the victory in these end times, when we're delivered up before the antichrist (satan) and his locust army, and GOD speaks through us. See also Romans 11, Mark 13:11, and "A Warning Against The Rapture".
23 That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:
Keep in mind that this was a very wicked and perverted place. In no way was Abram going to take any of Bera's riches because he knew GOD already provided him with enough riches from HIS blessings. Abram was not going to have it made known later on that any part of satan's kingdom (Sodom) played a role in his riches.
24 Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.
When we do things GOD's way, we always get the victory. Fear no one but HIM.
