Important notice: Always check out what you hear and see for yourself, as it is up to you as a Christian to do your own studying. Never take anyone's word alone, including this website here, without first always checking it out for yourself. As 2 Timothy 2:15 says "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
Genesis 22
And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt (= prove) Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he (Abraham) said, Behold, here I am.
Tempt = prove. See also: Exodus 15:25, Exodus 16:4, Exodus 20:20, Deuteronomy 8:2, Deuteronomy 8:16, Judges 2:22, Judges 3:1, Judges 3:4, Ecclesiastes 2:1, Ecclesiastes 7:23, 1 Samuel 17:39, 1 Kings 10:1, 2 Chronicles 9:1, 2 Chronicles 33:31, Psalm 26:2. Compare to Deuteronomy 4:34 (assayed).
And he (GOD) said, Take now thy son, thine only son (i.e. only son through Sarah; the promised child) Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah (= chosen by YHVH); and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
Notice the relations in this verse to what would eventually come with CHRIST. Here GOD says "take now thy son, thine only son Isaac". Remember it would be through this genealogy of people (the Adamic race) that CHRIST (GOD in the flesh) would eventually come, and remember HE (CHRIST) is the only "SON of GOD" because it would be only one time that GOD would be born of woman and HE would carry out that perfect sacrifice on the cross that would save mankind, whereby forgiveness can be received through. Here in this chapter we will see the example GOD is giving Abraham with his "only son (Isaac)" through Sarah, that would eventually be fully carried out by GOD with HIS "only Son (CHRIST)" on the cross.
And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
Many seem to have a hard time understanding this chapter as to why GOD would instruct Abraham to do this. First of all, as we've already explained above, this was a type of example for what would eventually be fully carried out with CHRIST on the cross. The whole purpose of this is simply to test Abraham's faith as well as to give him the somewhat understanding of what GOD would eventually have to go through with CHRIST. Notice Abraham's strong faith here though. He knows that even if his son does die, that GOD will resurrect him because HE has already promised him that it would be through Isaac that the covenant would be established, and that through him he would be called the father of many nations (Genesis 17:19, Genesis 17:21). How strong is your faith in GOD?
And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
There is only one sacrifice of man that was worthy of all, and as we all know that was CHRIST (GOD in the flesh) HIMself, as HE was and is the only ONE perfect who was able to Save us as mankind.
And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh (= YHVH will see or provide): as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba (= well of an oath); and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.
And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah (= queen or counsel), she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor (= snorting);
Huz (= light, sandy soil) his firstborn, and Buz (= contempt) his brother, and Kemuel (= congregation of GOD) the father of Aram (= high),
And Chesed (= increase), and Hazo (= vision), and Pildash (= flame of fire), and Jidlaph (= weeping), and Bethuel (= dweller in GOD).
And Bethuel begat Rebekah (= ensnarer [used in a good sense]): these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother.
And his concubine, whose name was Reumah (= elevated), she bare also Tebah (= slaughter), and Gaham (= sunburnt), and Thahash (= badger), and Maachah (= oppression).
