Genesis 37
1 And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.
2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah (Dan, Naphtali), and with the sons of Zilpah (Gad, Asher), his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.
In other words, he was being a tattletale.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.
This coat was more than just a colorful outfit, it consisted of long sleeves, like a robe, which was to be worn only by the chief and his heir. I.e. it represented who would be the head child and heir of the family. Definitely not a wise thing to do on Israel's (Jacob's) part to have shown favoritism. See also and compare with: Genesis 27:15, Exodus 28:4, Exodus 28:39, Exodus 39:1, 2 Samuel 13:18-19, Psalm 45:14.
4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.
6 And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:
Probably would have been best on Joseph's part to keep this amongst himself, as you can see the contention it has brought amongst his brothers.
7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.
When you look at this in the futuristic sense, it would be Ephraim and Manasseh who would come from Joseph, as they were his sons, and ultimately their nations today, particularly Manasseh's (the United states), is the leader of all other nations, and is hated amongst others. And so it is, keep this verse in mind as we finish up this book of Genesis, you'll see how this dream of his comes to pass, as Joseph really comes in handy, as he helps save his brothers for the famine soon to come upon them.
8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
This dream has about the same analogy as his first dream. I.e. the sun and the moon represent his parents, while the eleven stars represent his brothers bowing down unto him. As you will see, this will come to pass exactly as prophesied. See Genesis 42:6, Genesis 43:26, Genesis 44:14.
10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?
11 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.
Israel (Jacob) took note of what Joseph had said, for perhaps he knew it was GOD showing these things to his son.
12 And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.
And remember, Shechem's land is where Shechem had raped Dinah, and as result, Simeon and Levi killed him and wiped out all the Hivite men in that area (Genesis 34).
13 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.
14 And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?
16 And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.
17 And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan (= two wells). And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.
18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.
And as we can see, they are letting their emotions get out of control.
19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.
20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.
When you look at this in the futuristic sense, you can't help but think about the one world beast system of Revelation 13, that devours all the nations of the world, including the Christian ones too, as most everyone, except for the very elect, will be deceived by antichrist (satan) and his system. Are you sealed with the Seal of GOD? Are you aware of the order of events that must happen before our TRUE CHRIST returns? If not, check out our studies, "The Return of JESUS CHRIST" and "The Mark of The beast" and ask FATHER for wisdom, guidance, and understanding, and HE can help you.
21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.
22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.
In other words, Reuben had planned on returning him to their dad (Israel [Jacob]) again. Perhaps Reuben knew the hurt he had already brought upon him (Israel [Jacob]) back in Genesis 35:22 and did not want to bring more upon him; hence he suggested they not slay him.
23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;
24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.
Joseph probably didn't know what to think, considering he was only doing what he thought was right. His dad (Israel [Jacob]) is the one who gave him the coat, and as far as his dreams went, he was only sharing the truth of what GOD had revealed to him.
25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.
26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?
I.e. he's saying, "what good will that do us?".
27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.
In other words, they liked this idea.
28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen (i.e. Midianites only by land association); and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.
29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.
Remember it was Judah's idea to sell Joseph into slavery, so in order for that to take place, they waited until Reuben wasn't around. Now Reuben realizes Joseph is missing and that it is only going to bring more hurt upon Israel (Jacob).
30 And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?
In other words, "what am I to do?".
31 And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;
32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no.
Obviously they knew it was Joseph's coat. They just didn't have the nerve to tell Israel (Jacob) what they had done.
33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.
34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.
35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.
36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar (= belonging to the sun), an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard.
As bad as this whole situation looks, we'll see in the coming chapters just how GOD will use this for the very good, and how HE will use Joseph as a type of savior. And just as HE will turn this bad appearing situation into good, so can HE turn our bad appearing situations in life today, for the good; for only HE can turn our messes into messages, our tests into testimonies, our trials into triumphs, and victims into victors, because HE is great all the time and HE knows what HE is doing at all times. Forever trust in HIM, no matter what.
