The True Birth of JESUS CHRIST
Growing up, you were probably taught that CHRIST was born on December 25th just like a lot of us have been; maybe not but this is what most churches today teach. The BIBLE makes it pretty clear when CHRIST was born, and as you will soon see down below, it wasn't on December 25th. Although December 25th is not the birthday of our LORD and SAVIOR, it is still a very important day for us as CHRISTians as you will soon see below. Now you might be wondering, if CHRIST wasn't born on December 25th, then why do so many people teach that HE was? The answer to that is simply due to the traditions of men. All it takes is for one person or group to start something and then it gets passed on to another person and so forth, without ever taking much time to actually document if it's actually true or not. The same with many other false teachings today which include the any-moment (pre-tribulation) rapture, Adam and Eve being the first people, the earth being only about 6,000 years old, etc... Having that said, let's go ahead and begin in Luke 1. Keep in mind that Luke in the Greek means "light giver". He was a medical doctor (Physician) and so a lot of his terminology in the Greek is actually medical terminology.
Luke 1
1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
I.e. referring to the events that happened to and around JESUS CHRIST as HE walked this earth.
2 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
This is talking about the people who were present during the time of CHRIST's life, who witnessed HIS teachings. Luke is describing the events as they came to pass as an eyewitness.
3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
Theophilus when translated, means beloved of GOD or friend of GOD. Luke is writing to us as GOD's children (CHRISTians) in this book; he is very concise and specific when bringing forth the events so that we know exactly how it all took place.
4 That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
We can be certain of what Luke is telling us.
5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
We must be careful not to overlook anything of what Luke is bringing forth here. Here in this fifth verse you can see that Zacharias at this time was serving the course of Abia. At the time, there were twenty four courses that a Levitical Priest would serve in the temple and if we pay close attention, we will see that it gives us a date of when this happened. Zacharias as you know was serving the course of Abia which if you go to the Hebrew calendar and translate it to our English calendar, you will see that it happened on what would be our June 15th-June 19th. Keep in mind that Elisabeth is the wife of Zacharias. She was of the Levitical priesthood and in order to be of that, she had to have been born a full-blooded Levite in order to have been married to Zacharias.
6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
They were blameless. Zacharias fulfilled all of the requirements of being priest and so did Elisabeth as his wife.
7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
Here you can see they had no child yet. Both Zacharias and Elisabeth were well up in age.
8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
"He" is referring to Zacharias and the course taken place is Abia. Again, keep in mind that Abia is taken place during what would be our June 15th-June 19th.
9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
Zacharias was to burn incense. The people at this time whenever this would take place would always pray because they believed that their prayers rose up with the smoke of the incense and maybe were more likely to be heard.
10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.
11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
This angel was Gabriel.
12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
It wasn't often GOD sent an angel to deliver a message and so you can understand why Zacharias felt fear.
13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
Here you can see that Zacharias had been praying for a child even though him and Elisabeth were both up in age and GOD blessed them with one. What's strange about this verse is that GOD named his son Yowchanan which translated means John. It's strange because at the time there was nobody named Yowchanan in his family which means GOD's gift. His prayer was answered and so it was a gift.
14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
Here you can see that even before John was born, he was filled with the Holy Spirit.
16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
Because of his filling of the Holy Spirit, there will be many people to turn to GOD when he's born through his teachings.
17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
This is talking about the voice of John crying in the wilderness that will lead many to come to GOD's teaching.
18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
Here you can see that it's almost like Zacharias is challenging Gabriel because he's asking for a sign when clearly he just got one. He begins to show signs of doubt. It's okay to ask questions but when you start doubting, that's different. Zacharias and Elisabeth are on up in years. In their mindset a child seems to be coming very late. In Mary's case, it seems to come very early though as you will soon see below. You can only imagine how GOD would feel. Here Zacharias has been praying for a long time to receive a child and now that he's got one, soon to be on the way, he's doubting it.
19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
Gabriel in the Hebrew means man of GOD. Gabriel tells Zacharias that he is the man of GOD (Gabriel) who stands at the presence of GOD and is sent to him by GOD. Here you can probably imagine the fear is starting to come back in to Zacharias.
20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
Zacharias asked for a child and got one. Yet he was doubting it. He prayed for a child and then GOD sends him one and then he begins to doubt. So therefore Zacharias is sentenced to where he is not able to speak until everything has passed; until John is born. He being a priest is pretty much useless for the next nine months as far as verbally preaching the word since he no longer is able to speak until John is born. Here you can see what GOD thinks when HIS children doubt HIM. HE doesn't like it. Therefore we should never doubt GOD. HE's our FATHER. HE will never leave us nor forsake us. HE is forever by our side through the power of the Holy Spirit.
21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
They were wondering what was taking him so long.
22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
23 And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
This would have happened on June 20th because his course of Abia had officially ended that was June 15th-June 19th. Zacharias lived about 30 miles away from the temple which would have taken him at his age probably about 2 days to get home which would then take us to June 22nd along with the conception occurring on the 23rd or 24th .
24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
June 23rd/June 24th plus five months would then take us to November 23rd/24th. So that lets us know that by the time of November 23rd/24th, John had been in the womb for 5 months.
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
Elisabeth had been hiding for quite some time (5 months).
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
Here we are at the sixth month and Gabriel is back. Elisabeth has been pregnant with John for six months and so the date now takes us to right around December 25th.
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
Now Gabriel appears to the virgin Mary who at the time was espoused (engaged) to Joseph who was of the house of David. Joseph being a relative of David means that he was also of the house of Juda.
28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
Mary has been chosen to give birth to JESUS CHRIST who we know is GOD in the flesh. She has been chosen to give birth to our LORD and Savior.
29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
Mary was a little fearful at first because she is trying to understand what is going on and what's to come.
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.
Just as John was named by GOD, so is JESUS named by GOD. JESUS (YESHUA) being translated means salvation of YHVH (GOD). After all, CHRIST was GOD in the flesh (John 10:30, John 14:9) and it is through HIM that we can only have Salvation.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
JESUS CHRIST (YESHUA) is our King, and HE shall reign forever.
34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
Here Mary is wondering how it can be considering she has never been with a man before. It seems to be a little early. Unlike Zacharias in the beginning of this chapter, she isn't doubting it will happen but instead is wondering how it will happen.
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
JESUS is called the Son of GOD because HE is GOD in the flesh (born of woman). Remember in John 1:1 when it says "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with GOD, and the Word was GOD." Then in John 1:14 it tells us the Word became flesh?
36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
Again this is all happening right around December the 25th. You can also see the relation between Elisabeth and Mary; they're cousins. Not only was this day a very important day for Mary but for all of us as CHRISTians. This is the day of the conception of the LORD JESUS CHRIST (our Savior); the day CHRIST began dwelling with mankind. So although December 25th is a day many celebrate and honor paganism, for us as CHRISTians who know the truth and the course of Abia, we realize it is also the time of CHRIST's conception, and although we're not told in Scripture to celebrate that in any specific way, let it be a day where you reflect back and think about how special HIS conception was.
37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
Nothing is impossible with GOD. We may think something is highly impossible to do in life, but with GOD, HE can do anything; nothing is impossible with HIM. Never underestimate HIS power.
38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Mary didn't doubt it, she accepted it.
39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
Zacharias and Elisabeth were both full-blooded Levites as we learned from above. Luke stated that they both met all the legal requirements to be in their position. Zacharias being the priest and Elisabeth being his wife. She couldn't have been his wife if she had not been born a full-blooded Levite. Again they both met the legal requirements. Now because Elisabeth was a full-blooded Levite and Mary was her cousin, that means that Mary had one parent who was a full-blooded Levite which was her mother because her mother was a daughter of Aaron, and her dad on the other hand was from the tribe of Juda (Luke 3). Therefore that makes our LORD and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST from the tribe of Levi and of the tribe of Juda.
41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
When Mary approached Elisabeth, even John could feel the awesome presence of our LORD and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. HE leaped. This is proof right here from GOD that life begins before you're even born; when you're still in the womb.
42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
So there we have it. Elisabeth was in her sixth month with John the Baptist, and Mary became pregnant with JESUS CHRIST on December 25th. Below is provided a list of very important dates. If you have a Companion Bible (KJV), then you can see these dates along with documentation from the time of the conceptions to the births, of both John the Baptist and our LORD and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. Just turn to the 179th appendix. Below are the dates of when they were placed in the womb till the time they were born.
