As Christians, we should be listening to GOD's WORD, not what someone else has to say if it can't be documented. Who Is JESUS?
When it comes to the identity of JESUS, it seems some people have a hard time understanding who HE was/is due to the many titles HE is given throughout Scripture, such as the "SON of man", the "SON of GOD", the "SON of David", etc. Below, we'll begin in Matthew 1 and hopefully by the end of this study, it will clarify and resolve any confusion as to who JESUS was/is and allow Scripture to speak for itself.
Matthew 1:18-25
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused (i.e. engaged/betrothed) to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
It is nothing but a miracle this was able to happen, as the SPIRIT of ALMIGHTY GOD HIMself formed CHRIST inside of the virgin Mary's womb. Obviously if JESUS was just a man or just a prophet of GOD as some people believe, this would have never occurred, and instead he simply would have been conceived in the same way as any other person would, but notice that wasn't the case.
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
In other words, Joseph considered doing away with the engagement, and then that's when he was spoken to by the Angel of the LORD.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost (i.e. SPIRIT).
And so it was, the Angel of the LORD, was letting Joseph know that it was the SPIRIT of ALMIGHTY GOD that was causing this miraculous event to take place, as never before had it happened, nor will it ever happen again, where a virgin is able to conceive a child. Just as it was prophesied hundreds, and even thousands of years before, all throughout the Old Testament, the Israelite's knew the MESSIAH would one day come, little did Joseph know at the time, that it would be his future wife who would give birth to HIM.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
The name "JESUS" comes from the Greek transliteration "Iēsoûs", and means "YEHOVAH (GOD) is SALVATION". Notice the rest of this verse says, "for he shall save HIS people from their sins." Don't forget that as we continue on with the next verse.
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
Below is exactly what was prophesied all the way back in Isaiah 7:14.
23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
Don't overlook this, as unfortunately some people do. In the manuscripts, it quite literally means "with us is GOD". So as we can see, HIS name's meaning tells us exactly who HE is, which is "GOD with us".
24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden (i.e. told) him, and took unto him his wife:
In other words, he remained engaged to her.
25 and knew her not (i.e. he did not sleep with her) till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
So as we can see from this chapter, JESUS, a.k.a. "EMMANUEL", as foretold in the book of Isaiah, name quite literally means "GOD with us" or "with us is GOD". In Isaiah 9:6, it says "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:
and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God,
The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." Scripture couldn't have made this any clearer to those in doubt. So that should answer who JESUS is. Continuing, we'll turn to the first chapter of the book of John.

John 1:1-17
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
What did JESUS say in John 8:12? It reads, "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10 He (i.e. EMMANUEL/JESUS) was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
And sadly some still don't know who HE is.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13 which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
This of course aligning with what JESUS said in Luke 9:23, and John 3:5-6.
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Now just who is "the Word" again? It is GOD/JESUS, as written in verse 1 of this chapter. Again, this is why it is written in Isaiah 9:6, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.", and is why JESUS HIMself made it clear in many other verses, such as John 14:9, "Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?", and in John 10:30, "I and my Father are one.", that is why the self-proclaiming "Jews" falsely accused HIM of blasphemy and threatened to stone HIM, because they didn't believe and couldn't recognize who HE was, but Thomas (HIS disciple) did, as John 20:28 states, "And Thomas answered and said unto him, My LORD and my God." Surely if JESUS wasn't GOD, HE would have corrected Thomas for his words, but he didn't. After all, JESUS never sinned and if Thomas was wrong, HE indeed would have sinned by not correcting him.
15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
Now how could JESUS be before John if John was born before JESUS? There's only one way that could be, as answered above by Scripture. When JESUS was talking to the Jews in John 8, HE said, "56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. 57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. 59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by." Remember, who is the GREAT I AM? Exodus 3:14, "And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you." JESUS also used it seven times in HIS ministry: "I AM the BREAD of LIFE (John 6:35, John 6:41, John 6:48, John 6:51)", "I AM the LIGHT of the world (John 8:12)", "I AM the DOOR of the sheep (John 10:7, John 10:9)", "I AM the resurrection and the LIFE (John 11:25)", "I AM the GOOD SHEPHERD (John 10:11, John 10:14)", "I AM the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE (John 14:6)", "I AM the TRUE VINE (John 15:1, John 15:5)". And because HE is the GREAT I AM, HE does not change, as HE is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Malachi 3:6, Hebrews 13:8, Revelation 1:8)."
16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
You see, without grace, the law leaves us stranded, for there is not one perfect person who has ever walked in this flesh except for the WORD (CHRIST/GOD) HIMself. Every single one of us has broken GOD's law at some point which leads to separation from GOD, and if GOD is LIFE [which HE is], and we're separated from LIFE (HIM), that only means death awaits for us, as apart from HIM, there is no life. So rather than GOD destroy HIS children whom HE so dearly loves, HE rather gave up HIS own life in the glorious image of the SON, taking our penalty upon HIMself, as HE is the only ONE who could fulfill that perfect and ultimate sacrifice, whereby we could be forgiven of our sins, and be reunited with HIM in HIS eternal Kingdom; to whomsoever would believe upon HIM. Now although the law doesn't save us, it still stands, as CHRIST HIMself said in Matthew 5:17-18, "17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." Clearly this Heaven and earth age hasn't passed yet, so the law still stands; the only thing part of the law which was done away with were blood ordinances, because again, CHRIST became our ultimate Sacrifice for one and all times (Hebrews 10:12) and fulfilled the law. This is why Paul says in Romans 3:31 "Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law." And so it is, those who love HIM, will keep HIS commandments (John 14:15).
So there we see another witness in Scripture to just who this WORD is. That explains to us exactly why JESUS said in Revelation 22:13, "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last." And in Revelation 21:6, "And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely."
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

The Hypostatic Union
Now some might say, "if JESUS is GOD, then why did HE pray to HIMself?", or "why did HE say the FATHER is greater than HIM?", etc... Well it all comes down to understanding the Hypostatic Union which comes from the Greek word "hypóstasis", most notably found in Hebrews 1:3, which refers to the substantial nature of a person or thing; in this case, we're referring to EMMANUEL (JESUS), who as you will see below, shared both a divine and human nature, as again, HE was GOD in the flesh.
Evidence of JESUS' divine nature:
Evidence of JESUS' human nature:
Evidence of JESUS' divine nature:
- JESUS is called the "Mighty GOD" and the "Everlasting Father". Isaiah 9:6, [though quoted above] says, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."
- JESUS declares HE's the beginning and the end. Again, JESUS said in Revelation 22:13, "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last." And in Revelation 21:6, "And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.", and is why John 1:10 says, "...and the world was made by him..."
- JESUS is worshipped. Matthew 2:2 "saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.", Matthew 2:11 "And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.", Matthew 14:33 "Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.", Matthew 28:17 "And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted."
- JESUS is sinless. Hebrews 4:15 "For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.", 1 Peter 1:19 "but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:", 1 Peter 2:22 "who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:", 1 John 3:5 "And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin."
- JESUS has the power to forgive sins. Matthew 9:6 "But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house."
- JESUS is prayed to. Acts 7:59 "And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."
- JESUS knows all things. John 21:17 "He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep."
- JESUS gives eternal life. John 10:28 "and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand."
- The fullness of GOD dwells in HIM. Colossians 2:9 "For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily."
- JESUS is called "Lord" and agrees to it. John 13:13 "Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am." And Ephesians 4:5-6 says, "one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." And again in John 20:28, what did Thomas say? "And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God."
- JESUS knows the thoughts of others. Matthew 9:4 "And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?", Matthew 12:25 "And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:", Luke 6:8 "But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth."
Evidence of JESUS' human nature:
- JESUS prayed to the FATHER (John 17).
- JESUS was tempted. Matthew 4:1 "Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil."
- JESUS grew in wisdom and stature. Luke 2:52 "And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man."
- JESUS had a body of flesh and bones. Luke 24:39 "Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have."
- JESUS wept (John 11:35).
- JESUS bled. 1 John 1:7 "but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."
- JESUS died. Romans 5:8 "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
- JESUS hungered. Matthew 21:18 "Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered."
- JESUS thirsted. John 19:28 "After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst."
- JESUS was despised and rejected by other people. Isaiah 53:3 "He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not."
- JESUS was wounded and bruised. Isaiah 53:5 "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."
Now that we've seen multiple examples of both JESUS' divine and human nature, it would be wrong to claim that JESUS was just a man, or that HE's just GOD, because being fully human, HE faced and experienced many of the same circumstances, trials, difficulties, and hardships, as we do today, all while showing us how to get it done, and never once losing HIS Divinity and Kingship over the universe as GOD. Clearly from JESUS' human nature, it would not be crazy or meaningless for HIM to speak about GOD from a human perspective because again, JESUS was fully human just like we are. This explains why HE would say in John 14:28, "...for my Father is greater than I.", and took the role/form of a servant and humbled HIMself as the incarnate image of the SON, because during HIS time here on earth, HE temporarily "...was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man (Hebrews 2:9)." For this reason, Philippians 2:6-11 says, "6 who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." because HE lived accordingly to the FATHER's will (John 5:30). Remember, a sacrifice had to occur in order for our sins to be forgiven, and for the power of death to be defeated. If JESUS had come into this world as HIS immortal self, then there would be no sacrifice for our sins because GOD is eternal and incapable of dying. Conversely, if JESUS wasn't GOD, then HIS sacrifice would have been in vain because only GOD can Save and only HE is eternal. Isaiah 43:11 says, "I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.", and Hosea 13:4 "Yet I am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me." 1 John 4:14 also says, "And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world." Below are some things to consider:
If JESUS wasn't GOD, HE wouldn't have been perfect.
If HE wasn't GOD, HIS sacrifice would have been in vain.
If HE wasn't GOD, Isaiah 9:6 would be a lie.
If HE wasn't GOD, HE would have sinned by not correcting Thomas for saying "my LORD & my GOD".
If HE wasn't GOD, HIS name EMMANUEL ( = with us is GOD) wouldn't make sense.
If HE wasn't GOD, HE wouldn't have power over death and the ability to do miracles.
If HE wasn't GOD, HE wouldn't be able to forgive sin.
For this reason, JESUS said in John 8:58 "Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am."
For this reason, JESUS said “I am the bread of life.”, "I am the light of the world.", "I am the door of the sheep.", "I am the resurrection and the life.", "I am the good shepherd.", "I am the way, the truth, and the life.", "I am the true vine."
Now who again, is the GREAT "I AM" mentioned in Exodus 3:14? It is GOD.
For this reason, it is written in Revelation 19:16 "And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."
Misunderstanding the power of the Godhead and the hypostatic union does not change who JESUS was/is and how GOD manifests. HIS power and ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). HE's Supernatural, we're not. JESUS is the incarnate image of GOD which again explains why GOD included HIMSELF in Genesis 1:26 "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." Just as water can come in three different substances (solid [e.g. ice], liquid, or gas [vapor]), yet regardless of the substance, the three are one, just as regardless of the position/office of GOD, the FATHER, the SON, and the HOLY SPIRIT are one, as documented in 1 John 5:7. And remember who our LIVING WATER is? It is GOD/CHRIST (Jeremiah 2:13, John 4:14). GOD is the FATHER as HE is the Creator of the universe, HE is the SON as HE was born of woman, and it is HIS SPIRIT (the HOLY SPIRIT) that lives within us and amongst us today.
