Important notice: Always check out what you hear and see for yourself, as it is up to you as a Christian to do your own studying. Never take anyone's word alone, including this website here, without first always checking it out for yourself. As 2 Timothy 2:15 says "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
Genesis 19
1 And there came two angels to Sodom (= burning) at even (i.e. evening); and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom (i.e. Lot was a judge): and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground (i.e. Lot recognized these were GOD-sent angelic beings);
Keep in mind these are the same angels ("men") who met with Abraham in the last chapter. Remember, they went on into Sodom (Genesis 18:22) and now is where we continue.
2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.
Remember this city is nothing but a pure wicked place and for someone to remain out at night would be greatly unsafe. Keep in mind though these two are angels so they have no need for fear or protection.
3 And he pressed upon them greatly (i.e. he urged them); and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.
Again, just as we can consume of angels food (manna) because we're made in the same image as they are, so can angels consume of our food too. See also Exodus 16, Psalm 78:25, Luke 24:30, Luke 24:43, Acts 10:41.
4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
Notice how wicked these people were and how it wasn't just the older ones (adults) who were corrupt in this city but also the younger ones too. This makes you think about today's society because just as wickedness was present at that time, so is this same type present now and it's only getting worse.
5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know (yâdaʻ) them.
This word "know" is yâdaʻ in the Hebrew and it's used in a great variety of senses; figuratively, literally, euphemistically and inferentially and when you see how wicked these people are who lived in this area, with the type of mindset that they had, we can come to understand that this word "know" is euphemistically speaking for what these people want to do with them.
6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,
Notice Lot shut the door behind him.
7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.
8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man (i.e. they're virgins); let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
Although Lot and his family were more righteous than all the other people living in this wicked land, it is very difficult to understand how Lot could possibly even make or think of such a suggestion with his own daughters. As we can see, living around these wicked people for so long had started to rub off on him some. Maybe Lot thought they wouldn't bother his daughters since they were mainly into men and that his daughters could be a distraction to them but still to even think of such a suggestion is mind-boggling.
9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow (i.e. Lot) came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge (i.e. they're saying "he's a foreigner trying to be the judge over us"): now will we deal worse with thee (Lot), than with them (the angels). And they pressed (i.e. urged) sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.
10 But the men (i.e. the angels) put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.
11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.
This "blindness" was produced by the dazzling of light. This is just one of the nine instances of people being so smitten and as we know, nine in Biblical numerics represents judgment. See also Genesis 27:1, Genesis 48:10, Judges 16:21, 1 Samuel 4:15, 1 Kings 14:4, 2 Kings 6:18, 2 Kings 25:7, Acts 13:11.
12 And the men (i.e. the angels) said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:
13 For we will (i.e. "we're about to") destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.
Notice that not even ten righteous people could be found in this city due to how corrupt and wicked it had became. So now it's up to Lot and his family to move on out before GOD's wrath is poured out upon this place.
14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law (i.e. they didn't believe or take him serious).
As we can see, even Lot's son-in-laws had become corrupt.
15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.
16 And while he lingered, the men (i.e. the angels) laid hold upon his (Lot's) hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him [notice GOD's patience]: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.
I.e. these angels carried them out. You would have thought with the warning they were given that they would have gotten out of there a lot faster.
17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he (Septuagint reads "they") said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
18 And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my LORD (YHVH, not Adonai):
Here we see another 1 of the 134 occurrences like the last chapter where the kenite scribes changed YHVH to Adonai which strips our FATHER of HIS deity. The name YHVH shows GOD's eternal, never ending power and deity, unlike Adonai which gives HIM the title of an earthly king.
19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight (i.e. the sight of GOD), and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:
Here we have Sodom and Gomorrah about to undergo all out destruction and yet Lot's worried about leaving to go into the mountains.
20 Behold now, this city (Zoar) is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither (i.e. "let me escape there"), (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.
21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.
22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou be come thither (i.e. no destruction until Lot moves out of the way). Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar (= little, and is formerly known as Bela [see Genesis 14], which meant destruction).
23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.
24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;
Just as GOD poured out HIS wrath upon this wicked place then, so will it happen again in these end times with the whole earth. Once the first tribulation (satan's tribulation) is over, GOD is going to cleanse and remove all wickedness from this earth at the start of the seventh trumpet (HIS return). That is exactly why we want to be aware of the order of events and know what's taking place because surely you don't want to mistake satan as Jesus, as the whole rest of the world will (including most Christians) at that time; as it's written in Luke 23:30 and Revelation 6:15-16, they will wish for the mountains to fall upon them because they will be so greatly ashamed of themselves. See also "A Warning Against The Rapture".
25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground (i.e. the vegetation was also destroyed).
If you research this area, you will see that it has been one hundred percent proven that this event did occur and some of the remains still exist there today.
26 But his wife looked back (nâbaṭ) from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt (i.e. she died).
Notice the words "looked back". In the Hebrew it is nâbaṭ and it means to scan, i.e. look intently at; by implication, to regard with pleasure, favor or care:—(cause to) behold, consider, look (down), regard, have respect, see. As we can see, Lot's wife evidently had feelings for this wicked place and was looking back at the old lifestyle like she hated to see it go. Both Lot and his family were specifically told to leave and not to look back and what did Lot's wife do? She disobeyed and looked back; therefore GOD took her. Note that this took place just off of the Dead Sea, also known as the Salt Sea.
27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:
28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.
No where does it say Abraham looked at the cities but instead just the smoke in the air from the cities.
29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.
This is a perfect example of intercessory prayer; Abraham prayed for Lot and his prayer was answered. Never doubt what GOD can do.
30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.
31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth (ʼerets) to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth (ʼerets):
Again, this word "earth" in the Hebrew means ʼerets and it can refer to the whole earth or part of a land. As we know, other people were already on this earth at this time, as documented in previous chapters, whether or not these two girls knew it or not; just not any other men in this particular place where they are dwelling at.
32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
I.e. Lot became drunk and was unaware of what was taking place.
34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
Again, Lot became drunk and was unaware of what was taking place.
36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.
37 And the first born bare a son, and called his name Moab (= of his father): the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.
38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi (= son of my people): the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.
Keep in mind these are the same angels ("men") who met with Abraham in the last chapter. Remember, they went on into Sodom (Genesis 18:22) and now is where we continue.
